A building in a Granite City business district was destroyed by a fire Monday night.
The emergency call came at just before 11:30 p.m. Monday and several departments responded to find the building the 1400 block of Madison Avenue burning furiously with flames shooting high into the air.
The building where the fire started was a total loss. It was unclear Tuesday morning how the fire started or what sort of businesses operated out of the location. Media reports indicated that it may have been a family-run pet food store.
Firefighters were able to prevent the flames from spreading to neighboring buildings. But they couldn't save several cars parked nearby; they burned after a flaming wall collapsed on top of them.
Single digit temperatures made the fire tough to fight and it took hours for firefighters to eventually douse the flames. But, according to fire department reports, no one was injured in the blaze.
