Cardinals, other MLB clubs introduce new BP tops

Posted on February 11, 2014

The Cardinals -- and all the other MLB teams, for that matter -- have released new batting practice/spring training/money grab jerseys just in time for training camp to open tomorrow.

The new duds are pretty unremarkable. The Cardinals will wear red tops while shagging fly balls. Instead of navy blue stripes down the side they'll feature an odd, roundish navy patch in the armpit.

I don't know a lot about fashion. But I'm not sure I like the idea of highlighting the armpit.

As is typically the case these days, all of the other teams will wear a variation of the same boring pattern. The New York Mets will wear blue tops with orange arm pits. The San Francisco Giants will wear black with orange arm pits and so on...

The new tops are on sale for $80 on mlb.com. If the web site is any indication, the Cardinals will continue to wear their navy batting practice cap with a red bill. Introduced last spring, the cap is supposed to be a nod toward to the team's lids from the 1940s and 50s. But it's made out of a weird meshy material that contradicts the vintage feel.
