The New Douglas community (village and township) should congratulate Township Supervisor Duane Schallenberg for tirelessly pursuing the purchase of the New Douglas school building and property from the Highland School District. We should also be grateful to the Highland School Board of its generosity in providing the community of New Douglas with this choice piece of real estate at such a reasonable price. May it go a long, long way toward smoothing any lingering animosity for closing our school in the first place?
From my perspective, as a relative new-comer to the village of New Douglas, this acquisition should serve as a unifier of all factions within our community. I was born and raised around Alhambra. I spent my formative years there. I lived 40 years of my life in Madison County before moving away. I returned to the area with my wife of 58 years, Jean, to live out our remaining days in peace and tranquility.
While there may be some disagreement over the townships purchase of the New Douglas school, and the many forthcoming proposed uses, may that decision cease to be divisive. Now is the time for the community of New Douglas to pull together. Let us no longer depend on outside resources, other than grants, to do what we must do ourselves. Let us become a model of genuine community cooperation and unity that others will want to emulate. Together, lets make New Douglas proud again.
