Metro-east athletes earn medals at Winter Games

Special to the News-DemocratFebruary 12, 2014

A group of local athletes competed in the Winter Games held by Special Olympics-Illinois on Feb. 4-6 at Chestnut Moutain in Galena.

The competition featured approximately 400 athletes participating in alpine skiing, cross country skiing and snowshowing over a scheduled three days of competition.

The third day of competition, which was primarily made up of medals ceremonies, was called off because of the weather. All second-day medals were distributed that day.

Seven metro-east competitors took part in snowshowing. The team of Stacey Morgan (Swansea), Ryan Reiner (O'Fallon), Jordan Derossett (Belleville) and Andrew Birchem (O'Fallon) won a gold medal in the 4x100 meter relay.

The next day, in the 100-meter races, Morgan and Derossett both earned silver medals and Reiner won bronze. Christine Shield posted a fourth-place finish.

Colleen Costello (Millstadt) earned silver medals in the 200 and 400, while Kelsey Elder (Mascoutah) posted a fourth-place finish.

In the 50 meters, Morgan earned another silver while Shield placed fifth, despite having a competitor fall in her lane.

Because of cold temperatures and high winds, events on the second day consisted of just one run, rather than a preliminary round followed by the finals.

Despite the frigid weather conditions, all seven local entries posted personal records at the Games.
