The wife of a volunteer firefighter faces a burglary charge for breaking into cars on the Mitchell Fire Department lot and stealing another firefighter's wallet and medication.

Sara Y. Copper, 27, of 121 Big Four Place in rural Granite City, was charged Thursday with felony burglary, according to the Madison County Sheriff's Department.

Copper, also known as Sara Y. Kies, was being held Thursday in the Madison County Jail in lieu of $75,000 bail set by Judge Richard Tognarelli.

The Sheriff's Office responded about 3:39 p.m. Wednesday to the Fire Department at 213 East Chain of Rocks Road in Granite City.

The volunteer firefighter told police that he went to the fire station in response to a fire page on Tuesday. While he was there, Copper, the wife of another firefighter, said someone was breaking into cars on the parking lot.

The firefighter found that his wallet and a bottle of prescription medication was taken from his car. He watched footage from the fire department's surveillance system and saw Copper taking items from his car.

Police found Copper at home and took her into custody. The volunteer firefighter's wallet was recovered.
