News-DemocratFebruary 14, 2014

A spectacular fire Thursday night involving a tractor-trailer truck slowed traffic on Interstate 55.

But firefighters said the driver of the semi was able to escape his burning truck before the blaze destroyed it.

The semi burst into flames at about 9 p.m. on the interstate near exit 11 in Fairmont City, according to fire department reports. The cause of the blaze has not been revealed.

The fire took more than an hour for firefighters to extinguish.
