Stores sweeten Smartpone deals

In the confusing world of Who Has The Best Smartphone Deal, Target and Walmart are part of the mix with providers like Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. The big-box retailers currently offer a variety of deals as they try to lure customers.

For example, Target will give you a $50 gift card if you buy an iPad Air ($499) or iPad mini ($399). The deal also applies to iPhone 5sand 5c.

At Walmart, trade in your smartphone and get at least $100 toward the purchase of a new iPhone 5s or 5c. You also can trade in your old iPad and earn a minimum of $100 for the purchase of a new one. As always, you have to read the fine print on restrictions and contracts. The deals mentioned here are good only through today.

Today, bring in up to three gently used clothing items and save up to $15 on all sale purchases worth $20 or more at two downtown Belleville boutiques, Circa and Peace by Piece.

Donations will be made to The Toco Shop in Belleville, a nonprofit resale business.

If you need yet another way to store coffee pods for your Keurig coffeemaker, here it is. This oversized bronze-colored metal container is ready to sit on the kitchen counter and look, well, attractive and practical. While the size is just right to fit a couple boxes of K-Cups, you can put anything you want in the oversized coffee cup. You'll find the containers for $14.97 at Kirkland's in Fairview Heights by St. Clair Square.

Also, you'll find a lovely variety of sachets in wonderful frangrances (from essential oils), three for $5.

Check the clearance table now for the inexpensive Mardi Gras party sets at Burlington Coat Factory in Fairview Heights. They're at the back of the store on a long table. What you'll find are $3.99 boxed sets that include a dip-size ceramic green and purple fleur de lis bowl, a cheese spreader with an art-glass fleur de lis handle, and a packet of cocktail napkins. Another similar set includes napkins, four art-glass fleur-de-lis wine charms and a cheese spreader.

Besides a jack, first-aid kit and a toolbox, my trunk in winter always contains a telescoping shovel in case I get stuck in snow. It's maybe a foot wide, but the padded handle telescopes down to a manageable size so it doesn't get in the way of groceries and other stuff. You'll find the steel-core shovel from Suncast for $12.99 at Bed, Bath & Beyond in Fairview Heights, near the front door.

Getting your jewelry and cosmetics in order is a big task. Doing it in an attractive way adds to the dilemma. TJ Maxx in Fairview Heights has a good supply of clear acrylic boxes with drawers, others with top lids and big compartments for bracelets (or cotton balls), trays with spaces for lipstick, brushes and makeup, plus T-shaped bars for hanging necklaces. Prices range from $7.99 to $16.99.

Through Monday, JC Penney has an outstanding President's Day Home Sale on its large selection of quality towels. For example, Royal Velvet bath towels are $6.99 and $9.99, depending on style. Bath mats and accessories also are on sale, as well as blankets, bedding and other home items.
