Vice President Joe Biden will visit Granite City on Wednesday to mark the fifth anniversary of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Biden is scheduled to visit America's Central Port along with Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and former Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, who is from Peoria.
America's Central Port Executive Director Dennis Wilmsmeyer said the officials will discuss infrastructure investment.
A $24 million port under construction at America's Central Port is an example of this investment. The South Harbor project has received two federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery program, or TIGER, grants from the Maritime Administration in the U.S. Department of Transportation. The project was initially given a $6 million TIGER grant and then later an $8.5 million TIGER grant.
The fifth anniversary of President Barack Obama's signing of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act into law is Monday. The economic stimulus package was created to spur new infrastructure, improve education, health and energy. The initiative also provided federal tax incentives and expanded unemployment benefits and other social welfare programs. It was estimated to be $787 billion at the time of passage and later revised to $831 billion.
Wilmsmeyer said the event featuring Biden is not open to the public and only people with invitations can attend. The time of the visit has not been announced.
