Alton doctor pleads guilty to health care fraud

A metro-east physician has pleaded guilty to health care fraud and illegal dispensation of medication.

Dr. Viwathna Bhuthimethee, 68, who operated the Walk In Clinic in Alton, pleaded guilty in federal court Friday. Both offenses each carry a maximum of 10 years in prison. He also faces a maximum fine of $250,000 for health care fraud and a maximum fine of $500,000 for illegal dispensation of controlled substances.

Sentencing is set for April 3.
