East St. Louis shooting victim dies; car still missing

A man who was shot early Sunday and later died was identified as a 21-year-old East St. Louis man.

Melvin C. Connors III, 21, of the 600 block of North 78th Street in East St. Louis, was pronounced dead at 6:45 p.m. Sunday at St. Louis University Hospital, said East St. Louis Police detective Marion Riddle. Connors was shot about 3:30 a.m. Sunday on the parking lot of the Nathan Health Care Center, a senior assisted living facility, while talking to his girlfriend. The center is at 5050 Summit Ave. in East St. Louis.

Police did not have a motive and had not recovered the car taken during the shooting. The car is a gold 2003 Chevrolet Malibu with license plate number R84 8762.

Connors girlfriend was distraught but not physically injured during the attack, Riddle said. Connors became the second homicide victim of the year in East St. Louis.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call East St. Louis Police at 482-6700, Illinois State Police at 346-3990 or CrimeStoppers at (866) 371- 8477. CrimeStoppers is an anonymous tip line that pays up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.
