Okawville breaks into 1A Top 10 in latest state rankings

The surging Okawville Rockets broke into the Class 1A top 10 when the Associated Press released its latest boys state basketball rankings.

Okawville (22-6) was 10th in 1A, right behind No. 9 Madison (13-9). Gibault (19-7) fell out of the top 10 this week and was 12th.

Alton (20-4) and Southwestern Conference rival Edwardsville (22-2) held down the No. 7 and No. 8 spots, respectively, in the new Class 4A rankings. East St. Louis (14-7) also received votes.

In Class 2A, Central (20-7) was sixth and rival Mater Dei (17-9) was eighth, while Carlyle -- which beat Central on Monday -- picked up votes.

In the new girls basketball state rankings, Edwardsville (24-1) was third in Class 4A.
