Train derailment in Washington Park under investigation

There was a railroad train derailment in Washington Park early Saturday morning. The derailment was at a site east of Illinois Route 111 and north of Forest Blvd. where two sets of tracks cross at a right-angle.

— Three Alton Southern railroad cars derailed on Forest Boulevard near 65th Street early Saturday morning.

Steve Augustine, a superintendent with Alton Southern, said the rail cars were carrying automobiles that were bound for Chicago. Augustine said the rail cars were moving north about 20 mph when cars five, six and seven derailed. He said there were no injuries.

"That's the good thing. Nobody got hurt," said Augustine.

The rail cars had just started toward their destination.

Asked what caused the derailment, he said, "It's under investigation."

The automobiles in the cars that derailed were damaged, Augustine said.

The area where the derailment occurred is not a very busy area. And, workers were able to clear the tracks in a short amount of time.
