Monroe County water company issues boil order

News-DemocratFebruary 25, 2014

Customers of the Fountain Water District in Monroe County will have to boil water used for drinking or food preparation until Thursday.

According to a release from the company, construction on the water system will require the boil order. It started at 11 a.m. Tuesday and will last until 11 a.m. Thursday.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency requires a boil order be issued any time pressure in a public water system drops below 20 pounds of pressure per square inch. When pressure is low it is possible that contaminants could enter the water system.

Boiling the water for five minutes kills any potentially harmful bacteria that could enter the water system.
