Madison, Edwardsville and Cahokia move up in state basketball rankings

Coming off big wins over Jerseyville and Teutopolis, the Madison Trojans moved up from ninth to seventh in the final Associated Press Class 1A boys state basketball rankings released Tuesday.

Madison (14-5) is the top seed at the Bunker Hill Regional. Gibault was 11th in the final 1A poll and Okawville was 13th; both teams are in the Lebanon Regional.

Central (20-8) was 10th in the final 2A state rankings and Mater Dei (18-9) was 11th, with Nashville (21-7) and Carlyle (21-8) also receiving votes.

At No. 9 in the Class 3A rankings, Cahokia (18-7) was one of four South Seven Conference teams receiving votes. Carbondale (21-3) was sixth, Centralia (22-4) was 14th and Althoff (18-8) was 16th.

Edwardsville (23-2) moved up from eighth to seventh in the Class 4A Top 10. Alton (20-5) dropped into the receiving votes category after back-to-back defeats last week to Edwardsville and Belleville East.
