Collinsville man's death confirmed as gunshot wound to the head

News-DemocratFebruary 25, 2014

— The county coroner confirmed that Andrew Birch, 23, died of a single gunshot wound to the head Sunday, in a shooting police say was probably accidental.

Collinsville police found Birch at 1:30 a.m. Sunday in a home in the 600 block of Arrowhead Drive. Birch was transported to Anderson Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Madison County Coroner Steve Nonn confirmed that an autopsy was performed Monday and the apparent cause of death was a single gunshot wound. Nonn said any further findings would have to wait for the results of routine toxicology tests.

Police have said they believe the shooting is likely accidental, but would not give details about what happened.

"It's still an active investigation and I don't want to theorize until it is concluded," said Major Tom Coppotelli, assistant police chief.

Three people were present in the house when Birch was shot, and police have said they are all cooperating with the investigation.

Coppotelli said the case will be reviewed by the Madison County State's Attorney's Office next week.
