Suspect arrested in East St. Louis' fourth homicide of 2014

News-DemocratFebruary 26, 2014

— Two men are in custody in connection with the city's fourth homicide of the year.

Jared Blackmon, of the 800 block of North 72nd Street, was shot to death on Sunday, Police Chief Michael Floore said.

No motive for this killing has been established. Floore said, though, he is grateful to the community for tips that led police to the suspects.

He said the police department received a call in reference to shots fired and a man down at 6:45 p.m.

The city is participating in a campaign called "40 days of non-violence." The initiative is designed to teach would-be offenders anger management and other skills that will keep them out of conflicts. There also are programs in place throughout the city to keep the children occupied in positive activities.
