Former major leaguer to speak to local men's sports group

Former major-league outfielder Byron Gettis will be the guest speaker for the Belleville Area Senior Men's Sports Group on March 7.

Those interested in attending the 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. event should make reservations by contacting the PSOP (Programs and Services for Older Persons) office at 201 N. Church St., or call at 234-4410, ext. 7016.

Signed by the Kansas City Royals in 1998 after graduating from Cahokia High School, Gettis was the Royals' Minor League Player of the Year in 2003 after batting .302 with 16 home runs and 103 RBIs with Wichita in the Class AA Texas League.

After making his major-league debut in 2004, he was traded to Detroit after that season and completed his professional career in the Tigers' minor league system in 2005.

Gettis is currently the Director of Athletic Facilities at Lindenwood University Belleville, where he also is an assistant football coach.

Gettis played football at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2007 and later at McKendree University, where as a tight end he was the Mid-States Association Co-Player of the Year in 2008.

In 2010, he was an NAIA and College Fanz Sports Network All-America. He holds a bachelor's degree in educational studies from McKendree.
