Area hopefuls prepare for state swim meet

The metro-east is sending a strong contingent of qualifiers to the boys state swimming and diving meet, being held Friday and Saturday at Evanston High School near Chicago.

Edwardsville High School will send two relay teams and five individual qualifiers, followed by Alton with four qualifiers.

Edwardsville senior Patrick Hesse has the second-best qualifying time in the state in the 100-yard breaststroke at 57.28 seconds. Only the qualifying time of (Aurora) Metea Valley's Jordan O'Brien (56.31) was faster.

Edwardsville junior Peter Byers has the sixth-best time (1:54.89) among the 200 medley qualifiers while Alton's Addison Kaufmann (1:55.29) was 10th and O'Fallon junior Sean Workman (1:55.29) was 12th.

Workman has the ninth-best time among qualifiers for the 100 backstroke (52.09) and Byers also qualified for the 100 breastroke (59.16).

Alton senior Ricky Roberts was among the top 10 qualifiers in the 200 freestyle at 1:42.36. Roberts also qualified in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:45.55.

In the 50 freestyle, Edwardsville senior Patrick Hesse was the No 8 qualifier at 21.39 seconds.

Edwardsville's 200 medley relay of Byers, Hesse, Jake Gremaud and Guy Russo qualified with a time of 1:37.83. The Tigers' 400 freestyle relay of Hesse, Byers, Bryan McPherson and Gremaud also qualified (3:13.11).

Qualifying for the state meet was held last weekend at the Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin Sectional, where O'Fallon finished fourth with 112 points.
