You know youre a redneck when ... you prefer the Wordi Gras Celebration and Parade to those fancier-schmancier Mardi Gras events.
Wordens Wordi Gras started on a snowy Saturday seven years ago, when a handful of twenty-somethings were sitting around, disappointed and bored.
We had all wanted to go down (to the St. Louis Mardi Gras), but we didnt want to mess with the cold and the crowd, said A.J. Harshbarger, now 32, of Edwardsville.
Worden is north of Edwardsville.
The crew piled into the back of a pickup truck and drove down the villages main drag, waving, cheering and throwing beads to anyone in sight.
Fast forward to the eighth annual Wordi Gras Celebration and Parade thats ready to roll on Saturday. Thousands of people will be there to whoop it up.
The parade, for all ages, will kick off at 3 p.m. on Wall Street from Park Street to Drummond Street.
Beads will be available for purchase from the Metro East Humane Society at the parade.
Food and merchandise vendors will be located on Wall Street.
Participating businesses include Idle Hour Bar and Grill, The Yellow Dog Saloon, Sammies Prairie Inn and Morales Tacos. Food vendors, with everything from Cajun to barbecue, start serving between noon and 1 p.m.
In the evening, the towns bars will continue the fun for those 21 and over with live music and DJs under the tents.
