Back among the elite for the first time in 23 years, the Cahokia Comanches will be hunting for hardware today at the Class 2A dual team state wrestling tournament at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington.
Fresh off a forfeit win over Springfield at the Mahomet-Seymour Sectional on Tuesday, the Comanches will put a 13-5 record on the line when they take on Bloomington (16-2) in one of four Class 2A quarterfinals beginning at 9 a.m.
The trip to the state finals is the fifth for Cahokia, which last qualified in 1991. The Comanches claimed their lone state tournament trophy that year, when they placed fourth.
Semifinals are set for 2 p.m. with third place and title matches in all three classes set to begin at 6 p.m.
A win over Bloomington (16-2) would move Cahokia into a semifinal showdown with the winner of the (Lombard) Montini-Washington match.
Montini has won seven straight state team championships, including the last five in Class 2A.
The Comanches are led by two-time state medal winner Dameon Adams who is 31-6 in the 120-pound weight class. Other standouts for Cahokia are 113-pound Marlon Manual (25-9), 132-pound Dearis Tripler (27-9), 160-pound Derell Hinkle (27-9) and 220-pound Shelton Pippen (31-7).
