The Madison County Sheriff's Department is asking the public for help in tracking down the person or people responsible for the bold theft of a gun safe from a residence near Collinsville.

At about 6:15 p.m. Monday the sheriff's department got a call about a burglary in the 6600 block of Lebanon Road. The residents said someone entered their home while they were away and took a large metal gun safe. It contained firearms, ammunition, cash and two pounds of silver.

Security cameras revealed that the suspect or suspects arrived in a late model Ford Focus, possibly a 2008-2012 edition, at about 9:15 a.m. Monday and fled the scene with the safe sticking out of the open rear passenger side door.

Deputies believe there were two people in the car, although the video was tough to make out. Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call the sheriff's department at 681-692-0871 or 618-296-3000.
