I-64 lane closures plannned for bridge repairs

News-DemocratMarch 5, 2014

Six bridges along a stretch of Interstate 64 need some routine maintenance, and drivers between 18th Street and Kingshighway in East St. Louis will see lane closures starting Monday to accommodate the work.

The Illinois Department of Transportation reports that the stretch of highway -- three lanes in each direction -- will have one lane closed in each direction during the daytime driving hours, and up to two lanes closed in each direction on weekends and overnight.

Tom Borsch of IDOT says signs will go up on Friday alerting drivers to the coming repairs, and work should start on Monday. Borsch and IDOT expect contractors Keeley and Sons Inc., and The Killian Corp. to have the work complete by Oct. 31.

Borsch suggests drivers take alternate routes, including using Interstate 255 and Interstate 55-70, to avoid the area. Alternate routes are not marked; but Borsch said using I-255 and I-55-70 will add about 10 minutes to a driver's commute.

The work is the first of three stages to provide routine maintenance to six bridges along that stretch of interstate: 18th Street, Baugh Avenue, Southern Railroad, Terminal Railroad, 25th Street and 37th Street.
