An official groundbreaking is scheduled Sunday for Memorial Hospital-East in Shiloh, but the completion has been pushed back six months.
The new $124 million hospital originally was expected to open by July 2015. However, officials announced last month that the hospital will be on schedule to admit patients in early 2016.
The formal land dedication and groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at 1404 Cross St.
The 207,000-square-foot facility will house 94 beds on a 100-acre site near the intersection at Frank Scott Parkway East and Cross Street in Shiloh.
Earth-moving began in January, but hospital officials delayed the groundbreaking due to the prolonged winter weather.
"We wanted to wait for the weather to moderate before we held our groundbreaking ceremony," said Mark Turner, Memorial Hospital president and chief executive officer.
The hospital will feature all private patient rooms, a family care birthing center, an intensive care unit, emergency department, surgical suites and an array of diagnostic services including imaging and cardiac catheterization.
In December, the Southwestern Illinois Development Authority issued Memorial Group Inc. $164 million in tax-exempt bonds to cover the cost of the new hospital and to refinance existing debts, clearing the way for the project to begin.
During the bond-financing process, extensive site preparation work was completed on the land, including work on the lake and dam along with the installation of aggregate piers to support the five-story structure.
Swansea-based Holland Construction Inc. and Pepper Construction Group in Chicago will serve as the project's construction managers.
Ruth Holmes will serve as the Shiloh hospital's administrator.
The groundbreaking is open to the public. Parking will be available at St. Clare Catholic Church with shuttle service provided.
