Desperate to regain control

March 9, 2014

Several recent news items have made it clear that it's imperative we regain control of our renegade government at every level.

On the state level a couple of legislators, both Democrats, have proposed a one-cent-per-ounce tax on sweetened drinks. That means the two-liter soda on sale for 79 cents will soon cost $1.47 thanks to these "public servants" who obviously know better than any of us how we should be quenching our collective thirsts. Sen. Mattie Hunter said this would save the state money by reducing health care costs.

That brings us to Obamacare. See where that has led us.

Locally we have the St. Clair County Jail charging $1 a minute for video visits to prisoners. I'm no bleeding-heart liberal but it seems that contact with family is probably a good thing for a young man in jail.

When the manager of the county purchasing department, Tom Maziarz, says, "The way I look at it is we've got a captive audience" and Sheriff Rick Watson says, "If someone really wants to visit face to face we'd consider it on a case-by-case basis." it displays a callous attitude that seems to permeate government.

I'm guessing families of someone in jail usually don't have lots of extra money to spend. To use such exorbitant charges as a way to raise money, literally at the point of a gun, makes you wonder who the real crooks are.
