Indoor track and field

Two Cougars to compete in NCAA's

EDWARDSVILLE -- For the first time in school history, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville will be represented at NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field National Championships as bothLa'Derrick Ward, a Cahokia graduate, and Jatavia Wright will compete this weekend in Albuquerque, N.M.

"We are ecstatic to have La'Derrick and Jatavia earn spots at the 2014 NCAA Indoor National Championships," interim coach Eileen McAllister said. "This is a significant moment in the history of our program, athletic department, and University. It's a tremendous accomplishment."

Ward will compete in the men's long jump, which will take place Friday at 7 p.m. CDT. Wright qualified to compete in the women's triple jump, which begins Saturday at 7 p.m. All events will be held inside the Albuquerque Convention Center.

To qualify for NCAA Indoor National Championships, athletes must rank among the top 16 nationally in an event. For relay events, teams must rank in the top 12 in the nation.

Ward qualified in the men's long jump, tying for the 14th nationally with a school record leap of 25 feet, 3.5 inches (7.71 meters). The junior from Alorton, set the mark at the Hoosier Hills Relays in Bloomington, Ind., earlier this season.

Ward already has experience at the national level after becoming the first SIUE athlete ever to compete at NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships last season. He earned All-American status in the long jump at the meet.

Wright will participate in the women's triple jump, posting a school record mark of 42-8 (13.00m) to rank 14th in the nation. The native of Miami Gardens, Fla., took home OVC titles in both the triple jump and long jump last weekend.

Tennis

SIUE's Vincent honored by OVC

EDWARDSVILLE -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville junior Nicolas Vincent has been honored as the Ohio Valley Conference men's tennis Player of the Week.

Vincent, of Gatineau, Quebec, Canada, helped the Cougars to a 2-1 record this past week. SIUE defeated Loyola of New Orleans 7-0 and New Orleans 4-3 during a southern swing.

Vincent's victory over New Orleans' Rui Silva at No. 1 singles helped propel the Cougars to the 4-3 victory. Silva, who had been ranked as high as No. 110 in the country during his sophomore season, fell to Vincent 7-5, 6-4. Vincent also earned a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Trivesh Singh in SIUE's 7-0 sweep over Loyola.

Jacob Tanulanond teamed with Vincent to win all three of their doubles matches for the week, including an 8-7 (7-4) win over Southern Mississippi's Grigory Trotsenko and Chao-Yu Huang.

SIUE begins OVC play this weekend on the road. The Cougars travel to Eastern Kentucky Saturday and Morehead State Sunday.

Men's volleyball

McKendree tops Alderson-Broaddus

LEBANON -- Freshman middle blocker Wyatt Patterson put down a team-high 13 kills to lead the McKendree University men's volleyball to a three-set sweep at home over Alderson-Broaddus University (7-7). The Bearcats won by scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-23.

McKendree rolled to its fourth consecutive victory to improve to 7-15 on the year. The Bearcats will look to keep the momentum going with a road contest Tuesday at Lindenwood University. First serve is set for 7 p.m. in St. Charles, Mo.

In addition to his 13 kills, Patterson posted a hitting percentage of .545 against Alderson-Broaddus. Freshman outside hitter Mike Polizzi added nine kills in the win for McKendree, while freshman right-side hitter Eric Abrolat chipped in with eight attacks and a .467 hitting percentage. Freshman setter Jack MacLean registered a match-high 34 assists, while freshman outside hitter Andy Schnittker contributed seven kills, five digs and three service aces for the Bearcats.

Baseball

Cougars' Geissinger is co-Player of the Week

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville shortstop Skyler Geissinger has been named the Ohio Valley Conference's co-Baseball Player of the Week.

The sophomore enjoyed an outstanding weekend leading SIUE to an OVC series win over Eastern Illinois. He led the team offensively with a .500 batting average, eight RBIs, and a slugging percentage of 1.071 for the weekend.

In Friday's opener it was Geissinger's one-out home run that opened the scoring in a four-run second inning. On Saturday, Geissinger was 4 for 7 with four RBIs, including the game-winner in the 12th inning. Geissinger was 1 for 3 Sunday with a walk and a three-run home run in the eighth inning which pulled the Cougars within one of the Panthers at 5-4.

For the season, Geissinger leads the team with 12 RBIs and is third with a .333 batting average.

Geissinger shared the weekly award with Southeast Missouri's Derek Gibson. Jacksonville State's Zachary Fowler was selected as the Pitcher of the Week.

Softball

SIUE-Missouri State Moved to Thursday

EDWARDSVILLE -- Originally scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville softball team will now face Missouri State on Thursday at 4 p.m. in Springfield, Mo. The game was re-scheduled due to Wednesday's weather forecast.

The match-up with the Bears will be the Cougars' final non-conference game before the start of their Ohio Valley Conference schedule.

SIUE (6-13) will kick off OVC play when it hosts Austin Peay this weekend at Cougar Field. The Cougars and Lady Govs open a three-game series with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday before playing again at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

The Cougars have been away from competition since March 2, after the Southeast Games in Cape Girardeau, Mo., were cancelled this past weekend because of field conditions.

Women's tennis

LU-Belleville beats Lewis and Clark

BELLEVILLE -- The Lindenwood University-Belleville women's tennis team opened their home campaign with a match against Lewis and Clark Community College. The Lady Lynx got off to a quick start, sweeping all three doubles matches on their way to a 7-2 victory over the visiting Trailblazers.

With the win, the Lynx improve to 1-1 on the season while the Trailblazers fall to 0-2.

The Lady Lynx are scheduled to return to action Friday when they hit the road to take on Evangel University. On March 19, the Lady Lynx return home to take on Johnson County CC.

Women's soccer

SIUE announces summer camps

EDWARDSVILLE -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's soccer coach Derek Burton has announced the schedule for upcoming summer camps offered by the women's soccer program.

The Cougars will present three separate camps. The Junior Cougar Camp will run May 29-30 and again July 14-16. The Advanced Training Camp is scheduled for July 17-19.

The Junior Cougar Camp is an activity-based camp for boys and girls ages 6-12. The sessions run8:30 a.m. -11:30 a.m. each day.

The Advanced Training Camp is designed to help female players ages 13-18 expand their game. The focus will be on technical skill development, functional training, and game play. The sessions run 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. each day.
