A baby is fortunate to be alive after being improperly restrained in a vehicle that crashed due to a blowout, according to police.
Just before 1 p.m. Tuesday, a passenger car containing two adults, a child and a baby was traveling west on Interstate 64 near mile marker 3 in East St. Louis, Illinois State Police spokesman Calvin Dye Jr. said.
When the tire blew, the car ran off the road, went down an embankment and rolled over on its side. All four occupants of the car were taken to area hospitals with injuries that weren't believed to be life-threatening.
Dye said the baby was in a car seat, but the seat wasn't secured to the car with a seatbelt as intended.
The accident report was not complete as of Wednesday morning, so names of the victims were not available. There was no immediate word on whether the driver was charged.
