Sharpen up on editing

March 12, 2014

Unfortunately, readers of the Belleville News-Democrat have become accustomed to less than stellar editing. From my perspective of more than 25 years writing for and editing military publications, many of the errors in the BND are avoidable with proper attention to detail.

Many are found in headlines where the correct form of the word is found in the body of the article but clearly overlooked by the headline editor. The March 1 edition is a case in point.

The headline on page B3 for the story on Eliot Ness includes the word "underserving." which clearly should be "undeserving." The Associated Press story on page D5 concerning NASCAR contains several errors or word omissions. I read the same story in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and noted that the errors are yours, not the AP's.

The BND needs an upgrade in professional editing if it is to survive in these challenging days for traditional publications. Good luck.
