What's out there: Fishing rods, lanterns and cardboard eggs

March 16, 2014

RODS AND REELS: Reel in some big smiles when you hand a youngster his own fishing rod and tackle box. From Rural King in Swansea, you'll find boys' and girls' combos, with colorful reels that look like Dora the Exporer, her pal Diego and SpongeBob SquarePants. The spincast sets come with fun floats and cost $14.99. A Zoo Kids panda combo is $9.50.Matching plastic tackle boxes are $9.99 each.

LANTERNS: Lacquered lanterns from Lowe's in Belleville are the perfect size for pillar candles. All they need after that is (consistently) warm weather so they can be the centerpiece of a deck or patio table. In two sizes ($14.99 and $19.99) and three colors, each has a ring on top and glass panels.

CARDBOARD EGGS: These fairly sturdy molded cardboard eggs are almost big enough to hold all the Easter candy a child might want. They come in three sizes ($1.99 to $3.99) at Tuesday Morning in Fairview Heights. You can fill them with other sweet items, such as jewelry, hair ornaments, tiny toy trucks and more. They come in a variety of styles and are pretty enough to display.
