Not so fast on jail borrowing

March 16, 2014

A reminder to Madison County voters. Last fall, our illustrious County Board tried to ram through an $18.5 million tax referendum. using a loophole in Illinois law known as a back-door referendum.

They knew that if they let the people vote on it, it would never pass. Through a Herculean effort by 300 concerned citizens, who are tired of business as usual in this county, they sent the County Board chairman and his cronies home talking to themselves.

They needed approximately 17,600 signatures on petitions and we gave them more than 23,600 -- in less than three weeks -- and forced the issue onto the upcoming ballot.

On Tuesday, you have the opportunity to have a voice on this huge expenditure. They are counting on low voter turnout (it's a primary election) and voter apathy to try to get this pushed through.

Do not let them get away with this. They have $25 million sitting in the treasury to fund this. Did you know that in two more payments Madison County will be debt free? Why do you think they want to obligate you to 20 more years of higher taxes, hmmm?

Make them state their case in a public forum. After all, it's your money. Stop the backroom deals now. Vote "no" on the jail bond.
