The Troy Police Department is asking for the public's help after a 9-year-old girl was approached by a stranger Sunday and told to get in a van, according to the police department's Facebook page.

About 4:30 p.m. Sunday, the girl was walking from the Dollar General Store north on Riggin Road when she said she was approached by a subject in a black van asking her if she needed a ride. When she responded no, the driver told her, "Just get in the van."

The child ran home safely.

The black panel van had no windows on the rear or passenger side door.

The suspect is described as a older black male wearing a black T-shirt and skull cap.

The vehicle left the area driving north on Riggin Road.

Any witnesses are asked to call the police department at 618-667-6731.
