A Washington Park police officer investigating a burglar alarm early Tuesday found a suspect inside a food mart, there was a confrontation and the officer shot the man, police said.

Illinois State Police are investigating the officer's actions. He was placed on leave during the investigation.

"At 5:38 a.m. one of our officers went to investigate an alarm sounding at a local business. There was a brief confrontation that ended with shots fired," Washington Park Detective James Mister said.

The shooting was inside the St. Clair Food Mall, 3793 St. Clair Ave. in Washington Park.

The 32-year-old burglary suspect was wounded and taken to a local hospital, Mister said. The extent of his injuries was not immediately available.

He was from East St. Louis, but Mister would not name him. He also would not name the officer.

How the suspect entered the business was under investigation. Whether the suspect had a weapon was also part of the police investigation, Mister said.

The owner of the business came to the scene after the shooting.
