Weather Service: Fire risk higher due to strong winds

News-DemocratMarch 21, 2014

Friday's weather will be sunny and breezy -- so breezy that the National Weather Service is warning of a higher wildfire risk.

Friday's high will be 72, with increasing afternoon winds, and a chance of showers and an overnight low of 38, according to the National Weather Service.

The strong winds and low humidity put the region under an increased risk for the rapid spread of uncontrolled wildfires, according to the red flag warning issued by the weather service.

The warning is in effect from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday for parts of southwest Illinois, as well as central, southeast and east-central Missouri. It warns of winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.

Saturday and Sunday will be mostly sunny, but with cooler temperatures.

Saturday's high will be 51, with a low of 28.

Sunday will only hit 42, with a low of 24.
