Edwardsville falls in state semifinals

For the second straight season, the Edwardsville Tigers will be playing in the third-place game of the Class 4A boys state basketball tournament following a 38-31 semifinal loss to (Lisle) Benet Academy on Friday at Carver Arena in Peoria.

The Tigers trailed just 17-16 at halftime, only to see the Redwings boost their lead to 27-23 after three quarters.

A basket by Shawn Roundtree pulled Edwardsville to within 36-33 with 16 seconds remaining. But the Tigers would fail to score again.

Roundtree led Edwardsville with 13 points. Collin Bennett and Josh Yesufu topped Benet with 10 points apiece.

With the loss, Edwardsville (30-3) falls into today's 6 p.m. third-place game against (Lincolnshire) Stevenson.

The Tigers loss to the Patriots in the semifinals of the 2013 Class 4A state tournament, before defeating (Maywood) Proviso East in the third-place game.

Stevenson fell into the third-place game following a 75-69 loss to (Chicago) Whitney Young earlier Friday.
