Adams, Wacha muscle up as Cardinals beat Houston 5-2

The players aren't going to make anything easy on the St. Louis Cardinals front office.

Matt Adams, who factors into the Redbirds' crowded corner outfield/first base equation, had a homer and a double Saturday against the Houston Astros in Kissimmee. Meanwhile Stephen Piscotty, who has played himself into the big league picture with a strong spring, had a hit, an RBI and a run scored for St. Louis.

Piscotty is hitting a cool .333 for the spring while Adams is batting .310.

Mark Ellis, who has been on the shelf with knee tendonitis, got into the game Saturday and had a hit in three at-bats.

Aledmys Diaz, who was a perfect 2-for-2 in his Grapefruit League debut Friday, had another solid outing with a 1-for-3 day Saturday.

On the mound, the Cardinals starters continue to make things tough for the bullpen crew. Michael Wacha pitched seven sharp innings with eight strikeouts and two runs allowed on four hits and no walks. Seth Maness and Keith Butler were left to split the only two other innings available. Butler allowed one hit and Maness none in two scoreless frames.

Eventually it's going to come down to a numbers game and the St. Louis front office will have to make some tough decisions based not only on current performance but also the long-term development needs of players.

But the guys who make the roster shouldn't be comfortable or complacent because there are plenty of ready, willing and able guys who are going to be licking their chops at Class AAA Memphis.
