Traffic is flowing freely again into south St. Louis County after an early morning car accident caused a massive backup into the metro-east.
At 7 a.m. westbound traffic was backed up all the way across the Jefferson Barracks Bridge because of a major traffic accident on Interstate 55 at its connection with Interstate 255. The lanes were cleared by about 8:30 a.m.
Police said, because of overnight snow and morning temperatures hovering near the freezing mark, black ice was a problem for morning travelers. Bridges and overpasses which freeze faster than other road surfaces, were especially dangerous.
