Activist refiles lawsuit seeking removal of ESL mayor

News-DemocratMarch 25, 2014

Despite East St. Louis officials threatening a countersuit, activist Matt Hawkins has refiled a lawsuit against the city alleging elected officials violated the state's Freedom of Information Act and state laws dictating the administration of tax incentives.

Hawkins filed an amended lawsuit Friday in St. Clair County Circuit Court. In February, St. Clair County Associate Judge Chris Kolker dismissed an earlier complaint but allowed Hawkins time to amend and refile his complaint.

East St. Louis officials dispute the allegations and said the city will file a countersuit against Hawkins seeking to recoup legal costs should he file an amended complaint.

Hawkins asks the judge to remove Mayor Alvin Parks from office and levy $82,000 in fines against the city. He also seeks $100,000 in damages.
