Belleville fight leads to stabbing; woman in custody

Police arrested a woman accused of stabbing another person during a fight early Thursday in Belleville.

The St. Clair County Sheriff's Department and Belleville Police were dispatched about 5:30 a.m. to an apartment near 29th Street and South Belt West, where the fight was taking place. According to the dispatcher, the victim was stabbed in the neck.

Belleville Police Department Capt. Don Sax said the injury was not believed to be serious although police radio calls at the time of the incident said the victim was transported to a hospital for treatment. Sax said officers are still investigating the case and it has not yet been decided if charges will be filed.

Police did not release any additional information about the case including whether the victim was a male or female or what caused the altercation. The suspect's identity was not released because she has not been formally charged.

According to police reports, the suspect left the scene on foot and was picked up by Belleville officers about 6 a.m. in the 3300 block of West Main Street.
