Illinois State Police cited 24 metro-east drivers Friday with illegal cellphone use.

Trooper Calvin Dye said the citations were part of a heightened 24-hour patrol to further enforce road safety and in an effort dedicated to the memory of Trooper James Sauter, who was killed in the line of duty on March 13, 2013. Dye said Sauter and another trooper have been killed while on the job in the past two years and another sustained life-threatening injuries and is still recovering.

A total of 75 tickets were issued to those driving along major highways in St. Clair, Madison, Monroe, Clinton and Bond counties during "Operation Sauter," between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Friday. Dye said two of 16 commercial trucks stopped for inspection were placed out of service. He also said that the special patrol also found that most drivers wear their seat belts, as compliance has improved in recent years.
