Local news still matters

March 28, 2014

While President Obama and other world leaders face challenges in dealing with the Russian-Crimean situation, it is important that newspapers such as the Belleville News-Democrat report on domestic issues such as education as well as the issues that face Obama. Thank you to the BND for doing a commendable job of reporting on education, sports and more.

The BND March 23 front page and several inside pages coverage of the PTA Outstanding Principal of the Year Award won by Abraham Lincoln Elementary School principal Ed Langen is well-deserved. Congratulations to Langen.

I also congratulate premier educators William Mason and Maria Burton. Mason's recent BND essay was on target. Burton is principal at Dr. Katie Harper Wright Elementary School, where their Feb. 27 Black History program was educational and enjoyable.

As a member of the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Education Executive Advisory Board, it is significant to me that Langen and Burton took some of their professional training at SIUE and that media such as the BND do a fine job of covering education events and achievers.
