Jefferson College recruit Parker Beine tossed a complete game and struck out 11 and Trey Hopkins delivered the game-winning hit in the top of the seventh as Belleville West (6-2 overall, 1-0 in league play) knocked off Granite City 3-2 Tuesday in a Southwestern Conference game.
Pinch-hitter Ryan Helfrich reached on a leadoff walk in the seventh. Brendan Saak re-entered the game to run and took second on a wild pitch, then was sacrificed to third by Zach Skaer.
Hopkins followed with a single through the drawn-in infield to chase home the eventual winning run as Beine (3-0) held the Warriors (5-4, 0-1) scoreless in the seventh. Hopkins was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Beine allowed eight hits and two runs. Jake Freivogel and Ryan Steen each had two hits for Granite City and Dalton Kuenel had an RBI triple. Granite City's Austin Buzick struck out nine and allowed four hits and three runs in 6 2/3 innings.
Belleville East 7, Alton 4, 12 innings
Belleville East pushed across four runs in the 12th inning on five hits and three Alton errors as the Lancers (3-3, 1-0) opened their SWC season with a win.
East starting pitcher Brady Schanuel also was 3-for-6 at the plate, while Kevin Horner was 3-for-7 and added a key RBI double during the four-run 12th. Mitch Harlan picked up the win by pitching the final six innings.
Another hero for Belleville East was outfielder Domonic Blaylock, who made a game-saving catch in the bottom of the 11th inning. Blaylock hauled in a ball in the gap, then threw to second to double off a runner. Alton (6-3, 0-1) committed six errors in the game.
Mascoutah 3, Althoff 1
Mascoutah (8-1) scored all its runs in the fifth inning as Alex Oltmann had a double and two RBIs and Ryan Netemeyer drove in the other run. Collin Renth was 3-for-3 for Mascoutah and Netemeyer picked up the pitching win, allowing three hits and striking out five in four innings.
Grant Strieker drove in the only run for Althoff (3-2) and Eric Mertens added a double.
