Caseyville chief Alvarez survives another attempt to fire him

— Caseyville Police Chief Jose Alvarez survived another attempt by village trustees to fire him.

A motion to terminate his contract failed 4-2 after Alvarez and the trustees met for more than an hour in a closed session.

Trustee Rick Casey Jr. said he made the motion because "I feel it is in the best interest of the people."

The saga involving Alvarez began in February when Mayor Leonard Black fired him. The Village Board rehired him days later, only for Black to terminate him again after a heated meeting.

Alvarez was again rehired. Then, during a March 19 meeting, the board chose to retain him.

"We're all going to work together to make Caseyville a better place to live," Black said.

That's a promise Candi Eaves, of Caseyville, hopes the board keeps.

"I want them to take the politics out of the police department," she said.
