Madison County shares responsibility

April 6, 2014

Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons' concern for the taxpayers is touching. He said taxpayers were already hurt by former treasurer Fred Bathon's tax-buying scam and he doesn't want them to pay a second time. And so he's trying to get the county dismissed from a recently combined lawsuit.

It's too bad that Gibbons' predecessor Bill Mudge, now Judge Mudge, and other officeholders weren't watching Bathon's tax sales to prevent taxpayers from paying the first time. They likely knew what was going on and did nothing.

Or that federal prosecutors weren't interested in seeking restitution for the taxpayers who paid exorbitant penalties because of the scam. Too complicated.

As attorney Don Weber pointed out, the county has $2 million in insurance bonds to cover claims of misconduct by Bathon. We'd rather see Bathon and the tax buyers who profited pay. But the county shares responsibility for what happened.
