EDWARDSVILLE — Junior pitcher Bethany Dain scattered seven hits as the Belleville West Maroons upset the Edwardsville Tigers 5-3 Tuesday in a Southwestern Conference softball game.
"This is the first time as long as I've been coach that our team has beaten Edwardsville,'' West coach Casey Garrett said. "It was a big team win. They all did great.''
Dain, who got the starting nod because pitcher McKenzie Sisk has a sprained ankle, allowed only one earned run in the game.
"I told her from the very beginning her goal was to keep the ball down, make sure she hits her spots and let her defense play for her,'' Garrett said. "And, that's what she did.''
Olivia Young and Hannah Slimack each had a pair of hits for the Maroons, who evened their overall record at 3-3 and improved to 2-0 in the SWC.
Young had two doubles and drove in two runs, while Slimack had a single and a double and drove in a run.
Megan Glaesner and Danielle Touchette also collected RBIs for the Maroons, who scored four of their runs in the second inning.
"We made really good contract,'' Garrett said. "We hit pretty much up and down the lineup. We put the ball in play, and we have been practicing getting runners in scoring positions in. We started off the season leaving some runners on base, and we practiced getting them in. And, we executed it tonight.''
