Illinois State Police seized more than 5.5 kilos of heroin during a traffic stop on Interstate 55.

Troopers discovered narcotics hidden in an engine compartment of a silver 1999 Dodge Durango pulled over about 10 a.m. Friday near milepost 7. During a traffic stop for improper display of license plate, the trooper noticed the driver Rodolfo Hernandez-Flores, 46, of Tijuana, Mexico, was unusually nervous. A state police K-9 unit was deployed and immediately alerted to the presence of drugs.

The street value of the drugs was between $125,000 and $250,000.

After questioning, Flores admitted he was transporting the drugs from Mexico to Columbus, Ohio.

Flores was charged with possession with intent to deliver heroin, issued a warning for his license plate infraction, and then transported to the Madison County Jail.
