Metro-east players playing key roles for sixth-ranked UMSL softball

News-DemocratApril 10, 2014

Former metro-east softball standouts Brianna Butler and Brittni Chapman have helped the University of Missouri-St. Louis to a 28-3 record and No. 6 ranking among NCAA Division II teams.

The Tritons were ranked sixth in the National fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II poll. That's the highest softball ranking in school history for UMSL, which competes in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Butler, a Triad High School graduate and junior infielder, is third on the team with a .349 batting average. The two-time first-team All-GLVC selection has seven doubles, six home runs and 22 RBIs in 31 games.

Butler also was a first-team All-Midwest Region pick as a freshman when she hit .404 with 12 doubles, 10 home runs and 45 RBIs.

Chapman, a Belleville East graduate and junior pitcher, is 12-0 on the mound with a 1.62 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 95 innings. She was a first-team All-GLVC pick last season after transferring to UMSL from Morehead State, compiling a 17-7 record with six shutouts and team-leading 1.19 ERA.

Former Triad pitcher Kelsey Bailey is a freshman and Roxana graduate Paige Pluester is a sophomore utility player.
