Mascoutah police officer injured as suspect escapes

News-DemocratApril 11, 2014

A suspect escaped early Friday morning from police in Mascoutah after an officer was injured while trying to arrest him.

According to Mascoutah Police Department Sgt. Brian Stephens, at about 1:30 a.m. the officer, who was not named, noticed a suspect trying to break into a car near Maple Park. He approached the male suspect and the man fled. During the pursuit, the officer injured his foot and had to give up the chase while the suspect disappeared into the night.

"He's going to be fine," Stephens said of the injured officer. "He doesn't have any broken bones or anything like that. He should be able to return to work soon."

Stephens said Mascoutah has seen an increase in car burglaries over the past few weeks. The injured officer was part of a plan to increase patrols in the area where the crimes have been taking place.

Reports about the incident are not yet complete and police haven't released a description of the suspect. Stephens said it was unclear at this point if the man police are looking for is responsible for the other car break-ins in the area.
