Fairview Heights man charged with abduction

A Fairview Heights man faces child abduction charges for taking his 1-year-old child after an argument with his baby's mother.

Ramonte K. Gibbs, 23, was charged with one count of child abduction. His bail was set at $1,000.

Belleville police were called to a domestic battery at 7:30 p.m. Thursday on North Belt West and Frank Scott Parkway.

When the officers arrived on the scene, they talked to the baby's mother, who told them that she was in an argument with Gibbs while they were in a car headed west on North Belt West. The woman pulled to the side of the road during the argument. Gibbs took the baby from the car and fled into a nearby neighborhood, police said.

The mother stated she did not give Gibbs permission to take the child, though he has had permission to take the baby in the past. There was no established custody agreement between the parents, who were never married.

Gibbs later contacted the police and surrendered at the O'Fallon Walmart where he was arrested and charged. The child was then returned to the mother.

Gibbs was being held in the St. Clair County Jail.
