Grizzlies re-sign lefty, add a pitcher

News-DemocratApril 15, 2014

— The Gateway Grizzlies have re-signed left-handed pitcher Luke Westphal and added right-handed pitcher Seth McWilliams to their 2014 roster.

Westphal, 24, began his professional career with the Grizzlies in 2013, collecting a 1.59 ERA with no record in 13 relief outings. Westphal picked up 21 strikeouts in 17 innings before having his season cut short due to injury.

"When he was healthy Luke was one our better relievers last season," Grizzlies Manager Phil Warren said. "He has the chance to have a big year for us."

Westphal came to Gateway in 2013 after a stellar collegiate career at Division III University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The Clintonville, Wisc. native was a four-year starter and an All-American as a junior. He was also the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Association pitcher of the year that season.

McWilliams, 22, enters his first professional season after finishing up his collegiate career at Arkansas State University in 2013. The 5-foot-10 170-pound right-hander from Rolla, Mo., went a combined 7-7 in his two seasons with the Red Wolves. He appeared in 55 games, making three starts.

"Seth will come here and compete for a spot on our pitching staff," Warren stated. "We're excited to see what he has to offer in spring training."

The Grizzlies 2014 regular season opener is on May 16 when they take on the Traverse City Beach Bums in the friendly confines of GCS Ballpark. Season and Group tickets are on sale now.For more information call 618-337-3000.
