Car ends up in Belleville fountain after crash

Petroff Towing brought their huge boom arm tow truck to the Veteran's Memorial Fountain in downtown Belleville's Public Square early Saturday morning after a car hit the fountain and went airborne, landing into the water a little before 4 a.m.

The historic Veteran's Memorial Fountain in downtown Belleville's Public Square suffered damage when a driver plowed into it early Saturday morning.

About 4 a.m. a Toyota Camry with Missouri plates crashed into the north edge of the fountain, according to Belleville Fire Chief Tom Pour.

The name of the driver, a male, was not released.

He was treated and released after suffering injuries that were not life-threatening.

Petroff Towing, of Caseyville, brought a rotator wrecker, or a boom arm tow truck, to lift the vehicle out of the fountain about 5:30 a.m.

The fountain suffered some external damage to the curb. Workers with the Belleville Maintenance Department planned to drain and clean the fountain to investigate if there is any additional damage.

The fountain was turned on last week when the Exchange Club erected crosses for the Easter holiday.

None of the crosses were damaged, Pour said.

The cause of the crash was not available Saturday morning.
