Police capture armed robbery suspect in Fairview Heights

News-DemocratApril 25, 2014

Police say they have captured a suspect they believe is responsible for an armed robbery Friday morning at a Fairview Heights office.

At 10:30 a.m. a woman called 9-1-1 and said that a man armed with a handgun robbed her inside the Wooff Realty agency at 833 Lincoln Highway and then fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The victim provided police with a detailed description of the suspect and the blue Chevrolet Blazer in which he fled the scene. Fairview Heights Police Chief Nick Gailius said officers used that information to pull over a driver in the 10800 block of Lincoln Trail Road. He and his car matched the description given by the victim. A handgun was found in the vehicle.

Gailius said the man was taken into custody without incident. A second man in the suspect's vehicle was being questioned Friday afternoon at the Fairview Heights Police Department.

Police have not released the identity of the primary suspect, who has not yet formally been charged, other than to say that he's 24 years old. He remains in custody.

Charges will likely be sought Saturday, Gailius said. No one was hurt in the robbery or the process of capturing the suspect.
